What types of wax does West Tamar Wax use?At West Tamar Wax we use soy wax for our candles. Soy wax is a vegetable wax that is derived from the oil of soybeans, making it both natural & kosher. Soy wax is biodegradable, which gives a cleaner burn and is non toxic. On cooling after your first burn or after future burns, soy wax can appear bumpy or look to have crystalized. This is completely normal for soy wax and it will not affect the burn time or scent of your candle.

What wicks does West Tamar Wax use?West Tamar Wax uses HTP prowicks, they are made from cotton and feature braided paper fibers & do not contain harmful materials. HTP wicks can curl slightly as they burn - if the wick does curl, gently straighten it with a non flammable item to ensure an even burn. We occasionally use CDN wicks, which are cotton with a paper core and are zinc free. Always trim your wicks before each burn.
-
Are the fragrances natural? No, fragrance oils are not natural as they are mostly made from synthetic aromas.
-
What is Vanillin?Vanillin is a vanilla substitute fragrance, which when used in a fragrance may cause discolouration in candles.
-
What does the top, middle and base notes mean?"This is the layers that make up the scent of your candle and how you may smell them as they develop during your burn. The TOP NOTES are the first impression the scent of your candle gives you when you first smell or light your candle. The MIDDLE NOTES, also known as the heart of the fragrance can be sensed about 20-30 minutes into your burn. The BASE NOTES are the last or lingering scents you smell at the conclusion of your burn and even after you have extinguished the flame.

How do I get a more even burn from my candle?Upon your first burn, the candle must stay alight until the melted wax has reached the vessels sides. This creates the candles "memory", to ensure for future even burns. Not allowing the first burn to create this "memory" may result in tunneling of the candle. The first burn can take 4hrs. Always trim your wick before you begin each burn to avoid a large flame, which may cause your wick to smoke. Wick trimming also allows your candle to get a clean, even burn and prolong your candles life.
-
Why is the scent not strong?Candles can take up to 1hr before the scent is strong. Candles have a scent throw, so the bigger the candle the larger the throw. Room size is also a factor, if you have a small candle in a large room it may not give off the throw you desire. Breezes and draughts can also lessen the throw.
-
How do I stop my candle from 'smoking'?Always trim the wick before each burn, about 6-8mm should be enough. Some wicks can 'mushroom' during a burn, causing smoke - hence why the need to trim. If you cut the wick too short it will drown in the candle. Trimmimg the wick also gives the candle a clean and even burn.
-
How do I store my candles? Please store candles in a cool, dry and dark place to avoid 'sweating' or fading from direct sunlight. Extreme cold could result in a change of the wax known as frosting, while this may change the appearance of the candle it is still safe to burn. Also always keep the lid on your candle when not in use to prevent dust or debris collecting on your candle.
-
What is the best way to extinguish a candle?A candle snuffer is a great & simple way to extinguish your candle. Using a wick dipper (or similar, as long as what you use is not flammable) to gently push the lit wick into the wax and straightening it after it is out is another way to extinguish your wick. Alternatively you can just gently blow the candle out. Always replace the lid after use.

Why does my wax melt not smell strong?Your wax melts may not appear to be giving off a strong scent due to a number of factors.. Electric warmers can take awhile to warm up and only give off a mild scent due to the low wattage bulb used inside the warmer. Is your warmer near an open window or wide open space? Drafts can affect the scent throw as well as wide open spaces. The smaller the room, the stronger the scent. How many wax melts have you used at once? 1-2 melts are recommended, as too much wax can affect the scent throw.
-
How do I clean or remove an old melt from my warmer?Warm the wax and wipe out any remaining wax. Wipe warmer bowl/tray clean and replace with new melt. Please dispose of your wax into a rubbish bin.
